Aldéarde was probably the first owner of the old Airvault castle. In 950, while walking along the Thouet, she fell into it and, not knowing how to swim, she implored heaven to help her. A cow which was grazing nearby then approached Aldéarde who clung to her and so the bovid saved her from certain death. To thank heaven for this miracle, Aldéarde began in 980 the construction of the Airvault church. In 972, she married the Vicomte de Thouars, Herbert 2 and died in 1010. Aldéarde said that she "liked to take refuge in Airvault to rest from the vicissitudes of power"

This room is named after the lord of Airvault who, on the 22nd September 1565, had the honour of receiving King Charles IX and the young Prince of Navarre (the future King Henri IV) at the château.

We wished to make this room bright and “modern” whilst still retaining its authentic feel.

We have named this room in a reference to the “rumour” according to which Voltaire, who often visited the region (Airvault and St Loup), chose his pen-name by reversing the word Airvault. This would make him the “inventor” of Verlan (making a new word by reversing the order of its syllables).

We wanted this room to be intimate and dream-like.

This is the most beautiful room in the château and has been tastefully decorated to allow you to appreciate all its romanticism.

Our King’s Room is full of light thanks to its stone mullioned window, through which you can see the château walls and keep, as well as the St Pierre church spire and the town of Airvault.

In 1439, Marie Rieux, the Duchess of Thouars, attacked Airvault with 1500 soldiers. After overcoming and destroying the town’s fortifications, the soldiers turned their attention to the château, which was able to withstand the onslaught. However, the fiery duchess ordered so many arrows, stones and other projectiles to be fired into the interior of the château that Sybille de Liniers, the wife of the lord of Airvault, had to abandon her apartments to avoid “serious injury and perhaps death”.
